Although you can't stop your patio from sinking, you can help reduce the time it starts to sink with maintenance. As water fills in between the joints it freezes as the temperature drops. As the ice expands it pushes the pavers away from each other, causing your patio or wall to sink or fall apart. This process is called freeze-thaw weathering. Adding sealer will enhance the look of your patio and will protect the paver itself from discoloration. With newer and better materials like Permeable Pavers you don't have to worry about adding polymeric sand. Water will just drain down to the base (CA-7) Gravel which is stronger and less likely to hold water like the old crushed gravel base used back in the old days. Although you could still use permeable sand to fill the joints on permeable pavers. It's a matter of choice.
